Nike turn disused swimming pool into a skate park

I love this.

Nike took an old swimming pool in Dagenham that was about to be demolished and turned it into a world class BMX park called, simply and brilliantly, The Pool.

I really like that logo.

Wieden & Kennedy's new Design Director

I started a new job this week. Yes, an actual job. I'm the new Design Director at Wieden & Kennedy London. So far this century I haven't been the PAYE type but heading up a brilliant team of exciting print and interactive designers at an incredible agency is too good an opportunity to miss.

Whilst I'm very familiar with w+k and the people there, there is still a lot to take in, a lot to think about and a lot to do.

I'll be blogging about some of that over here. As well as the usual stuff about benches and the 2012 logo.

Exciting.

What should I write on my memorial bench?

I really want a memorial bench. Always have.

Southwark Council, where I live, will let you put a bench in my local park for £500. You can even walk round with the park rangers and choose the location. So I'm going to do that.

It's a lot of money, but I want to invest in a bench that I can enjoy for the rest of my life.

And that's sort of the problem. Obviously these benches are normally bought by loved ones to remember someone who has passed away. I'm not dead which is great, but leaves me with a dilemma as to what I should write on the plaque.

So what should I write?

Speaking of front pages

It's not a spoof, it's from the Telegraph Weekly so it covers the two biggest stories of the last week. Two pretty big newspaper stories.

Is it the best front page ever? You can vote for that on the Huffington Post.

Beyonce surprises students

I love this so much. It's fab. Look at the students when she joins in at about 1min 26secs.

And then she joins for the rest of the song. What a sport.

50 good pieces of design advice

 

You may have already seen this as it got retweeted a lot last week. But in case you haven't, Jamie has complied a splendid list of 50 Things Every Graphic Design Student Should Know. Jamie says,

"From speaking to friends, colleagues and recalling my own experiences I’ve complied The 50, a list of 50 things I believe every graphic design student should know on leaving college. Some of these points are obvious, others less so – but all are brief, digestible nuggets of wisdom that will hopefully go some way to making the transition from graduate to designer a little bit smoother."

It's good. Pop over here and have a read.

An opportunity missed?

Above is a selection of newspaper front pages the day after the Royal Wedding. Interestingly there is nothing much to report - they're all pretty much the same.

Apart from the Times they've all gone for the same picture. No-one has tried anything unusual, nothing graphic.

I suppose the job of a newspaper on a day like this is almost to give you the picture you expect. The shot most people would like on the front page is The Kiss. I wonder what the sales have been like these last few days. I bought these in a supermarket where they were running out fast. It was about 11am and the shop assistant said they'd sold out of papers the day before and they were pretty close to selling out on that day.

The Times deserves some credit for trying a more interesting shot. I love the approach but I'm not sure it works to be honest. I've been a bit unfair to the others by showing the front and back of the paper. The actual front page looks like this.

Doesn't quite work as well. Seems to miss the red, somehow.

The Indy, of course, tried this Tracey Emin exclusive which I think is an abysmal failure.

I really like the idea, but I don't think it works. Sure, there are newspapers and readers who aren't interested in the Royal Wedding but in that case why not leave it off the front page. Or just treat it like a normal, fairly large, news story which is what the Guardian have done.

A fairly conservative, slighlty dull, set of front pages. An opportunity missed I feel.

Oxford Street

The other day I was walking down Oxford Street when shuffle threw up Oxford Street by Everything But The Girl.

That was a nice break, wasn't it?
